Over time, the names assigned to many U.S. cities have undergone changes. If we were to return to the original names we would be hard to remember that, for example, New York was called New Amsterdam and Los Angeles was known as Porciuncula. And this simply because the city was originally called with a very long name Nuestra Señora de Los Angeles de la Porciúncula, "which was shortened in the first Porciuncula and then in Los Angeles.
